Befriending

The main objective of the Befriending Service is to support people experiencing enduring emotional or mental health problems. The service aims to alleviate the loneliness of people with mental ill health who are isolated geographically or circumstantially. The project offers an independent ‘listening ear’ and an opportunity to build meaningful and trusting relationships in a safe environment. Volunteers also encourage a wider network of social participation so reducing the stress of isolation.

Befriending is an informal, non-judgemental and confidential service, free to service users and carers.  Referrals can come from social services, health service professionals, relatives and friends as well as from the individual themselves.

Through opportunities for volunteering we support existing personal skills, the development of new ones and promote a positive attitude to mental health within the community. Regular supervision, training and support are given to the volunteers.

In this year 22 individuals have received at least 970 hours of support from both volunteers and through the befriending support groups over three locations. Groups have been developed in Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven and in the Haverfordwest Resource Centre, which is a women only group.
